Plants can cause two types of contact dermatitis: mechanical and chemical ones.

- MECHANICAL : The main irritant is the CACTUS (Opuntia microdasys "), the family of CATACEAE , which has big thorns that can cause skin reactions similar to reactions caused by scabies and dermatitis to fiberglass.
These plugs have a toothed surface and once inserted in the skin is very difficult to get them out.
addition to irritative reaction then there is the possibility of inoculation micro-organisms such as Clostridium tetani and Staphylococcus aureus.

treatment: removal of the plugs with a gauze pad to be glued to the skin and then rip.

- CHEMICAL : There are several families of plants that contain chemical irritants, including the main ones are:

- Amaryllidaceae
- Araceae
- Bromeliaceae
- Cruciferae
- Euphorbiaceae
- Liliaceae
- Polygoniaceae
- Ranunculaceae
- Solanaceae

The chemical irritant is the main C alcium oxalate, which is contained in large amounts in DIFFENBACHIA PICTA (family Araceae), a plant that decorates the homes of millions of American families, and that is released upon contact with its leaves and can cause burning sensation, swelling of mucous membranes and the formation of bubbles, lasting up to 12 days. In addition, the
Calcium oxalate accentuates the irritability of the other chemicals and are a typical example of proteolytic enzymes' Ananas comosus , attacks on workers in pineapple plantations.

The most common is itching caused by plants and then the itch by DAFFODIL (SPP NARCISUS . "of the family Amaryllidaceae), which affects the hands, causing erythema and fissures.

L 'Euphorbia PLATIFILLA is known for its milk rather irritating, but its name comes from the laxative properties of its seeds, milk can give even temporary blindness if it comes into contact with eyes.


Finally CHILLI contains capsaicin, which if applied for more than 20 days induces atrophy of the skin nerve endings giving a feeling of anesthesia, but that is also used as therapy for chronic itching.

Treatment: immediate washing with mild soap and plenty of water, followed by submersion of the affected area in vegetable oils.
